In February 1920 the war memorial was dedicated to the memory of the men of the village who fell in the Great war. It had been erected at the corner of Boat House Lane on a plot of land given for the purpose by Hiram Morecroft. The plinth of the cross had the following inscription: – βTo the Glory of God, and in honoured memory of the gallant men of this parish who gave their lives for King and Country and for the cause of liberty and right in the Great war 1914 β 1919. We trust them, O Lord, to Thy loving care.β This inscription was then followed, in the order of the year in which they were killed, the names of 43 men. A further 3 names were added later.
Following the second World War a further 8 names were added.
Over the years the surrounds of the memorial were damaged by lorries and eventually it was decided to move the memorial to its current location at the end of Millmoor Avenue where it was re-dedicated in May 1969.
The War Memorials Online website has numerous photographs of the memorial in its current location and all the names inscribed on it can be read with ease – to visit that site simply click this link.
