This study explores a local legend that, on the eve of the Battle of Shrewsbury in July 1403, two knights—Sir Robert Mavesyn, a loyal supporter of King Henry IV, and Sir William Handsacre, an ally of the rebel leader Hotspur—met and clashed in a skirmish on the banks of the River Trent. According to the legend, the encounter ended with Handsacre’s death, while Mavesyn continued to the battle at Shrewsbury, where he also met his demise. Members of the Ridware Study Group embarked on a thorough investigation of this tale, delving into historical records, local folklore, and geographical evidence to separate fact from fiction. The findings of the study shed light on the intersection of legend and history, offering insights into the enduring power of local myths and the rich historical tapestry of the region.
