The Great War

On Saturday 20th February 1920 it seems like most of the villagers managed to cram into the Club & Institute in Old Road for the presentation of souvenirs to the men of the village who had served in the war and survived. The souvenir took the form of a metal shield on an oak stand, inscribed “The Great War, 1914-1919. Presented to ————– with gratitude by the people of Armitage”, each name being inscribed on the shield, while at the base of each is the cap-badge of the man’s regiment. The pottery, E Johns & Co., had erected a staging for the exhibition and presentation of the shields  – it stretched the full length of the room and rose in nine tiers, with 25 shields on each tier.

After singing of the National Anthem Mrs. Gardner presented each shield to the individual soldier. Shields were also presented to Mrs. E A Walker of the Voluntary Aid Detachment who had worked at Ravenhill Auxiliary Hospital, to the Rev. Father McNabb who received a composite shield on behalf of Hawkesyard Priory and to Miss Dorothy Gardner, M.B.E.

On the following day, Sunday 21st February, the memorial cross, paid for by public subscription, was unveiled and dedicated by Brigadier-General Stewart, C.M.G., D.S.O. Initially it was erected at the corner of Boat House Lane on a plot of land given for the purpose by Mr. Hiram Morecroft. Only 43 names were originally on the cross but a further 3 were later added.

After the pottery warehouse was erected down Boat House Lane in the late 1960s the surrounds of the memorial were occasionally damaged by lorries on what was a tight corner and the memorial was relocated to a more central spot donated by the pottery, Armitage Ware Ltd. It was re-dedicated on Sunday 18th May 1969.

Until 1939 this war had not been called the First World War of course and the people of the parish had no idea of the horrors to come. Roy Fallows has chronicled the lives of the 46 who died, as recorded on the War Memorial, in his book ‘Armitage with Handsacre Soldiers of the First World War’ (available from the Ridware History Society).

Appendix 1 of that book shows another 62 names of soldiers who survived the war. This number has now grown to nearly 300 – shown in the searchable table below – using a variety of sources:

  • the 1918 electoral roll (which indicated if a voter was in the armed forces at the time of compiling the voting list)
  • newspaper reports
  • searches on the military record sections of websites such as Ancestry, Findmypast and The Genealogist
  • a document at Stafford Record Office showing the prayer list from St. John the Baptist church

Included are eleven men connected with the Parish who died but are not shown on the War Memorial – they may however be shown on Memorials in other locations. I would be grateful for any more information on these or on any who should be added.

If the name in the table below is underlined then further information can be found by clicking on the name. At the moment the eleven men mentioned above have extra details as do the five men who could not be traced when Roy wrote his booklet.
